Using Technology to Meet the "Silver Wave"

Updated: Jan 12, 2023

As the population ages, the demand for healthcare services is expected to rise. This increase in demand will place a strain on already overburdened healthcare systems. To meet the challenges posed by an ageing population, we must begin to implement innovative solutions that make use of medical technology and artificial intelligence.

One way to ease the strain on healthcare systems is to make use of telemedicine. This is where medical services are delivered remotely, using technology such as video conferencing. This can reduce the need for patients to travel to see a healthcare provider, and also free up time for staff.

Another similar way to ease the strain on healthcare systems is to use remote patient monitoring (RPM). This is where patients use technology, such as wearable devices, to track their own health data. This data can then be sent to a healthcare provider, who can monitor the patient’s health and give advice accordingly.

Both telemedicine and RPM are expected to create much more data on patient health than the healthcare providers are used to. This poses a challenge for healthcare providers who have to review and analyze these datasets. Read more about how artificial intelligence can take advantage of the increasing generation of health data.
